1.3. Importance of the profession in society

One of the expected career paths for a professional in the field of Arquitectura is to dedicate themselves to the design, construction and management of resilient and sustainable buildings and urban spaces. In the context of national development, it is evident that countries that aspire to reach first-world status have invested in high-quality buildings, housing and public space as a fundamental pillar. Thus, our graduates must be prepared to operate in the local, national and globalized market we live in.

Our future professionals could also create firms capable of executing large-scale real-estate and urban development projects, driving the country's competitiveness. This new profile is focused on generating innovative industry. If we are able to design and build buildings and cities that meet international standards, we will also be in a position to attract new foreign investment. Such investments would generate more well-paid jobs and establish a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth. From this perspective, we can affirm that this profession will be an engine that decisively drives the country's development through strategic investment.

It is important to remember that the greatest innovations in modern building design and urban development — such as smart cities, net-zero buildings, sustainable water management systems and energy-efficient buildings — are based on design principles and technologies that have been developed and refined in the academic and research world for decades. It is logical to think that academia should not limit itself to studying only the latest version of a specific software or construction tool, when the fundamental science and technology behind them have been known for a long time. For this same reason, it is rare anywhere in the world to see a university establish agreements with a multinational corporation to teach only its proprietary tools, because our mission is to generate that fundamental knowledge and capacity for innovation and not merely to know how to use existing tools.

We must also not forget that the students who enroll today will enter the job market in approximately 5 years, and in a world that changes so fast, we cannot and should not teach them considering only the current market. Our professionals must be prepared to solve the design and urban-development problems that will exist in 10 or 15 years — problems related to climate adaptation, population growth, resource scarcity and digital integration — and this is only possible through a solid foundation in design, research and broad critical thinking.

The development of well-designed housing and public space is key to social integration and national competitiveness. Projects such as affordable housing programs that connect entire neighborhoods not only improve quality of life, but also facilitate access to opportunity, drive regional development and foster social cohesion. Likewise, the renewal of historic city centers represents a qualitative leap in sustainable urban mobility and livability, connecting communities efficiently, safely and with low environmental impact, which revitalizes local economies and improves the population's quality of life.

In the digital era, physical buildings are complemented by critical technological infrastructure. The design of high-performance, resilient data centers requires not only reliable power and advanced cooling systems, but also specialized architectural and structural design that guarantees their physical security, fiber-optic connectivity and capacity to withstand natural disasters. These facilities are the core of national and global connectivity, enabling the massive storage and processing of data that drive the digital economy, modern public services and technological innovation across every sector.

A high-quality built environment is not merely a consequence of development; it is a prerequisite and a catalyst. It connects communities, facilitates commerce, improves quality of life, guarantees public safety and enables the efficient provision of essential services. A country with first-world buildings and cities attracts talent, fosters innovation and positions itself as a reliable partner in the global economy. Therefore, training architects with a global, sustainable and technological vision is an investment in the very foundation of the future prosperity and sovereignty of our nation.
