1.3. Importance of the Career in Society
One of the paths expected for a professional in the field of computing is to dedicate themselves to producing software or integrate into software-producing companies. In the field of computing, it is common to observe that countries have Associations of Software Producers whose policies are oriented towards export. Therefore, it would not make sense to prepare our students only for the local or national market. Our graduates must be prepared to operate in the globalized world in which we live.
Our future professionals should be oriented towards creating new technology-based companies that can increase exports of Peruvian software. This new profile is aimed at generating innovative industry. If we can export competitive software, we will also be able to attract new investments. New investments would generate more well-paid jobs at a low cost compared to other types of industries. From this perspective, we can affirm that this career will be an engine that will decisively drive the country's development with a very low investment compared to other fields.
It is necessary to remember that the greatest innovation in recent commercial product versions uses technology that was known in the academic world 20 years ago or more. A clear example is databases that support spatial data and queries in recent years. However, they use data structures that have existed for decades. It is logical to think that people in the academic field do not dedicate themselves to studying the latest version of a particular software when they already knew that technology a long time ago. For the same reason, it is rare in the world to see a university have agreements with a software multinational to teach only that technology because our role is to generate that technology and not just know how to use it.
We must also not forget that the students who enter today will enter the market in approximately 5 years, and in a rapidly changing world, we cannot and should not teach them considering only the current market. Our professionals must be prepared to solve the problems that will arise in 10 or 15 years, and that is only possible through research.
