1.3. Importance of the Program in Society

One of the expected career paths for a professional in the field of Ingeniería Civil is to dedicate themselves to the design, construction, and management of resilient and sustainable infrastructure. In the context of national development, it is evident that countries aspiring to achieve first-world status have invested in cutting-edge infrastructure as a fundamental pillar. Thus, our graduates must be prepared to perform in the local, national, and globalized world we live in.

Our future professionals could also create companies capable of executing large-scale infrastructure projects, driving the country's competitiveness. This new profile is focused on generating innovative industry. If we are capable of planning and constructing infrastructure that meets international standards, we will also be in a position to attract new foreign investments. Such investments would generate more well-paid jobs and establish a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth. From this perspective, we can affirm that this program will be an engine that decisively drives the country's development with a strategic investment.

It is important to remember that the greatest innovations in modern infrastructure—such as smart cities, high-speed railways, sustainable water management systems, and energy-efficient buildings—are based on engineering principles and technologies that have been developed and refined in the academic and research world for decades. It is logical to think that academia should not limit itself to studying only the latest version of specific construction software or equipment, when the fundamental science and technology behind them have been known for a long time. For this same reason, it is rare in the world to see a university establish agreements with a multinational corporation to teach only their proprietary tools, because our mission is to generate that fundamental knowledge and innovation capacity and not just know how to use existing tools.

Nor should we forget that students entering today will graduate and enter the market in approximately 5 years, and in a world changing so rapidly, we cannot and should not teach them considering only the current market. Our professionals must be prepared to solve the infrastructure problems that will exist in 10 or 15 years—problems related to climate adaptation, population growth, resource scarcity, and digital integration—and that is only possible through a solid foundation in science, research, and broad thinking.

The development of strategic infrastructure is key for national integration and international competitiveness. Projects such as the construction of cross-country highways that connect the entire nation not only reduce transportation times but also facilitate market access, stimulate regional development, and foster social cohesion. Similarly, the implementation of high-speed trains represents a qualitative leap in sustainable mobility, connecting major cities efficiently, safely, and with low environmental impact, which energizes local economies and improves the population's quality of life.

In the digital age, physical infrastructure is complemented by critical technological infrastructure. The development of high-performance and resilient data centers requires not only reliable energy and advanced cooling systems but also specialized civil infrastructure that ensures their physical security, fiber optic connectivity, and capacity to withstand natural disasters. These centers are the core of national and global connectivity, enabling the massive storage and processing of data that drives the digital economy, modern public services, and technological innovation across all sectors.

High-quality infrastructure is not merely a consequence of development; it is a prerequisite and a catalyst. It connects regions, facilitates trade, improves quality of life, ensures public safety, and enables the efficient provision of essential services. A country with first-world infrastructure attracts talent, fosters innovation, and positions itself as a reliable partner in the global economy. Therefore, training civil engineers with a global, sustainable, and technological vision is an investment in the very foundation of our nation's future prosperity and sovereignty.
