Civil engineering has undergone fundamental and continuous development since the dawn of civilization, establishing itself as the indispensable pillar of humanity's material progress. This discipline is the engine behind the development of infrastructure, housing, transportation, sanitation, and energy, tangibly and permanently transforming our built environment and the quality of life in societies.

The practice of civil engineering has marked every era of history, from the earliest structures to contemporary megaprojects once considered unimaginable. The continuous evolution of its methods, materials, and technologies is transforming the conception, design, construction, and management of complex infrastructure. Its influence is decisive in sustainable urban development, water resources management, disaster resilience, transportation connectivity, and the safety of the buildings in which we live and work.

To understand the relevance and strategic importance of this discipline for our country's development, it is enough to mention that investment in infrastructure is a key indicator of economic growth and global competitiveness. The infrastructure built by civil engineers constitutes the physical foundation for all other productive and social activities.

While the core of the profession is clear and universal - the application of scientific and technical principles to create works that serve the public - academic training in this field may be presented under different emphases or names, such as Civil Engineering with a focus on Construction, Structures, Hydraulics, Transportation, and Geotechnical Engineering, among others. This diversity reflects the breadth and specialization within the discipline itself. However, it is fundamental that a central, solid, and shared body of knowledge exists to guarantee professional competence and public safety, regardless of the particular curricular emphasis.

Historically, civil engineering developed from military and civil construction practices, evolving into a formal scientific discipline during the Industrial Revolution. In modern universities, it consolidated as an independent branch of engineering, distinct from architecture and military engineering. Its academic recognition is based on a profound body of knowledge that integrates mathematics, physics, mechanics, geology, and materials science applied to real-world problems.

In Peru, infrastructure development is a national priority demanding highly skilled, ethical, and innovative civil engineering professionals. Higher education institutions face the challenge and responsibility of training these professionals to the highest international standards, responding to specific territorial challenges and aligning with global trends in sustainability, digitalization, and resilience.

The School of Ingeniería Civil recognizes this imperative need and assumes the commitment to lead this educational effort. It cannot remain on the sidelines of this imperative for excellence and updating, in which staying at the forefront is an obligation to effectively contribute to national development and societal well-being.
